You are welcome to visit the club flying site on any Saturday or Sunday morning. There will usually be a number club members present (weather permitting) who will be happy to answer any questions you have (though, preferably not while they are actually flying!)

Flying Field.

The flying field is located on Collins Road, Melville. Heading south out of Hamilton on Ohaupo Road (SH 3), turn right onto Collins Road at the traffic lights, opposite the Urlich Ave Shopping Centre. The access track to the field is located 2.4 km west along Collins road, not long after passing over the railway lines. Look for Fonterra Dairy # 73442 and the Model Aircraft sign on your left side next to a long private acccessway (a tanker track). Take this metal track straight for 1 km south and you will find the flying field on the right hand side. Please drive slowly (no faster than 20 km/h). Park on the sides of the track or in the parking area immediately adjoining the Pits .

Leave things exactly as you find them (e.g., gates). As the Airfield is located on Private Property, please treat it with respect. NOTE. Remember to DRIVE SLOWLY down the access road!

From time to time we also fly at Lake D near Horotiu

Lake D is situated on Lake Road Horotiu. The easiest way to get there is to take State Highway 1 to Horotiu, turn into Horotiu Bridge Road, go over the bridge, turn left onto River Road, then after 400mtr turn right into Lake Road. Stay on Lake Road for 4 Km until you see the driveway to the lake on your left hand side

HMAC Flying Protocols

  1. Obtain your frequency peg from the peg-board BEFOREswitching on your transmitter. (Place your name peg on the board if you are using 2.4Ghz)
  2. On this site and on most occasions, you will be expected to leave you transmitter in a pound whilst not in use. Make sure you do this, as it is a protection against accidental frequency interference.
  3. Check your model for airworthiness, including correct response to controls, and that the batteries are in good condition and fully charged.
  4. Carry out a range check on your radio with the aerial down and pointing at your model from at least 25 metres.
  5. The Pits area is for parking your models, checking and preparing for flight. You must not taxi in this area nor over fly it or park your car on it.
  6. The pilots must stand to the north side of the runway in front of the pits, and should be in a close group so that they may communicate with each other when necessary.
  7. The runway should be kept clear except when taking off and landing. You should communicate both intentions to the other pilots, and get their acknowledgement that they have heard you and are prepared. Only walk on the runway when taking off or retrieving your model or doing so for someone else. It is common practice and recommended at this site to have another non flying person standing next to you to advise of other model aircraft or full size aircraft movements.
  8. There is a height restriction of 400ft. in this area. As this is difficult to judge, make sure you are well below that if there is any manned aircraft in the vicinity. In this regard, you have no rights and all responsibility.
  9. The area on theSouth side of the runway is for flying in, and you are expected to follow an approximately rectangular circuit, the direction of which will depend on the wind direction. If there is no wind, this direction should be established by mutual agreement. Flyers of helicopters and planes who do not wish to fly in the circuit for any reason must exercise due caution at all times and clearly communicate their intentions to other pilots in the Pilots Box.
  10. Flyers in an organised competition have preferential use of the airfield during the times specified for the event by the event organisers.
  11. Keep the engine noise below 96 db at 3 metres. If you have any doubts, get it checked using the clubs Noise Meter. A World-wide excuse for shutting down flying sites is excess noise. (Limiting Engines to below 10 000rpm also helps reduce noise levels)
  12. Fly within the bounds of the site and do not over fly other property.
  13. Do not park on the mown area this is for models and flyers only.
  14. Use fence styles and gates if you need to get to another paddock.
  15. Replace the electric fence if you have to remove it. It must be erected at the end of all flying sessions, the last pilot flying is responsible for ensuring the fence is up and going before leaving the site.
  16. Inform a member of the committee if you notice or cause any damage.
  17. Flying times are: 9 am till 7pm on weekdays, 9am till 7 pm on Saturdays, and 9.30am till 7pm on Sundays and public holidays.
  18. Lock the club house and sheds when you leave. Return the peg board to the TX pound shed. Replace and re-connect the electric fence.
  19. There is NO SMOKING allowed at the flying field. Our airfield stands on peat so we must be extremely careful not to allow anything to ignite a peat fire in the area.
  20. Always keep the gates to our paddocks closed except for entering and leaving.
  21. Leave the main gate from Collins Road as you find it.
  22. Keep your speed below 25kmh on the drive to reduce wear and dust.

These rules are for everyone's safety, for themselves and their planes, follow them at our site and any other you may visit, and you should not get into difficulties with other flyers or members of the public.
