Flying Field.

The flying field is located on Collins Road, Melville. Heading south out of Hamilton on Ohaupo Road (SH 3), turn right onto Collins Road at the traffic lights, opposite the Urlich Ave Shopping Centre. The access track to the field is located 2.4 km west along Collins road, not long after passing over the railway lines. Look for Fonterra Dairy # 73442 and the Model Aircraft sign on your left side next to a long private acccessway (a tanker track). Take this metal track straight for 1 km south and you will find the flying field on the right hand side. Please drive slowly (no faster than 20 km/h). Park on the sides of the track or in the parking area immediately adjoining the Pits .

Location Map

Leave things exactly as you find them (e.g., gates). As the Airfield is located on Private Property, please treat it with respect. NOTE. Remember to DRIVE SLOWLY down the access road!

From time to time we also fly at Lake D (Kainui) near Horotiu
Dates when this occurs are advertised in the Events page

Map

Lake D (Kainui) is situated on Lake Road Horotiu. The easiest way to get there is to take State Highway 1 to Horotiu, turn into Horotiu Bridge Road, go over the bridge, turn left onto River Road, then after 400mtr turn right into Lake Road. Stay on Lake Road for 4 Km until you see the driveway to the lake on your left hand side

HMAC Flying Protocols

  1. The flying field is a NO SMOKING area. The use of highly inflammable model aircraft fuels presents a known hazard. Our airfield stands on peat so we must be extremely careful not to allow anything to ignite a peat fire which would jeopardise our club strip.
  2. All children under 10 years old must be under direct supervision of an adult
  3. Any animals must be under control and on a leash
  4. All fliers must be conversant with the Site Map and the following Protocols
  5. The Club Captain is the director of flight operations His word is the law.
  6. Persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol are not permitted to have control of an aircraft.
  7. Non club member pilots must be sponsored and accompanied by a club Pilot at all times when flying at this field.
  8. The Pits area is for parking models. You must not park your car on it nor taxi planes within it
  9. Over flying the car parking, pits and taxi way areas is forbidden (see site map)
  10. Obtain your frequency peg from the peg-board BEFORE switching on your transmitter. (Place your name peg on the board. This also applies if you are using 2.4Ghz)
  11. The charging of batteries on site must be undertaken with extreme caution. They should be contained in a flame proof enclosure whilst being charged
  12. Your model must be airworthy, with correct response to controls, and the batteries in good condition and fully charged prior to take-off.
  13. All new or repaired aircraft must be checked over by a competent independent pilot prior to flying
  14. Carry out a range check on your radio with the aerial down and pointing at your model from at least 25 metres away, every day prior to flying
  15. Models with 2 metre or greater wingspans and/or engines over 50cc must be restrained with safety poles for starting
  16. Ensure there is no person in line with your aircraft’s propeller before starting your engine
  17. Do not point your aircraft with its motor running at anyone.
  18. Before you or your aircraft enter onto the runway for take-off, landings or retrievals you must inform all pilots in the box of your intentions and receive acknowledgement from them before proceeding.
  19. Before proceeding onto the runway look right, look left, look right again, if there are no approaching planes proceed. Stay alert as planes sometimes need to make emergency landings. Clear the runway as quickly as possible.
  20. When flying, all pilots must stand to the north side of the runway in front of the pits, and should be close enough to communicate with each other as necessary
  21. It is good practice to have another non flying person standing next to you to advise you of other model aircraft or full size aircraft movements.
  22. Under no circumstance should you interfere with a pilot whilst he is flying an aircraft
  23. There is a height restriction of 400ft. in this area, make sure you are well below that height. Manned aircraft have absolute right of way. In this regard, model pilots have no rights and all responsibility.
  24. The area to the South of the runway is the main flying area, and you are expected to follow an approximately rectangular circuit, the direction to be established by mutual agreement. Flyers who wish make low passes over the Runway must clearly communicate their intentions to other pilots in the Pilots Box.
  25. Flyers in an organised competition have preferential use of the airfield during the times specified for the event by the event organisers.
  26. Keep the engine noise below 96 db at 3 metres. If you have any doubts, get it checked using the clubs Noise Meter. A World-wide excuse for shutting down flying sites is excess noise.
  27. Fly within the bounds of the site and do not over fly other property.
  28. On this site, you may be asked to leave you transmitter in a pound whilst not in use.
  29. Return your frequency peg to the board when you have finished flying
  30. When retrieving models use fence styles and gates if you need to get to another paddock. Ensure you close any gates you have to open.
  31. Inform a member of the committee if you notice any hazards or damage around the field
  32. Remember everyone’s safety is your responsibility.
  33. The last pilot flying is responsible for ensuring that the peg board is in the shed, the club shed is locked and the electric fence erected correctly and re-connect before leaving
  34. Always keep the gates to our paddocks closed except for entering and leaving.
  35. Leave the main gate from Collins Road as you find it.
  36. Keep your speed below 25kmh on the drive to reduce wear and dust.
  37. The Club reserves the right to expel any person from the HMAC Field

These guidelines are for everyone's safety, for themselves and their planes, follow them at our site and any other you may visit, and you should not get into difficulties with other flyers or members of the public.
